The Pantanal and the fires that occurred in 2019 and 2020 were featured on NASA’s news website. The report brings some analysis by researchers from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Cardiff University and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
Scientists say extreme heat and drought in 2020 have worsened the fires. But it is not the only cause, human presence is one of the main factors in the increase in fire outbreaks. “Based on a range of data, that these fires would not have happened in the absence of human activity.,” explains Sujay Kumar, a hydrologist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
With each new study completed, the need for urgent medium and long-term management strategies to protect the Pantanal from increasing fires becomes clearer.
